38 weeks

How Big is the Baby?

Hovering around 7 pounds, and 18-22 inches long. The size of a watermelon. A friggin’ watermelon people. Holy guacamole.

 

How I’m Changing

Pretty much the same as the last few weeks: more sciatic pain than ever, swelling in my feet, ankles, and fingers (and I think my thighs, unless I really gained 2.5 actual pounds this week). Nausea is back too. I’m also not sleeping well. Training for what is to come I suppose.

 

How I’m Feeling

Soooo ready to be done being pregnant. I feel like I’ve been pregnant forever, and she’s just going to stay in there and never come out! Although I keep waking up in the middle of the night with cramps, and get excited and touch my stomach only to not feel contractions. Just my body getting ready for next week (I hope!).

 

What I’m Eating

Lots of small meals to ward off the nausea. Today I cracked open my first can of pumpkin for the season. Yay! My preggo brain is in full force too. This morning I thought I pulled out my bulk steel cut oats, but after 20 minutes I checked the pot to realize I cooked quinoa. Oops. Topped with pumpkin, pecans, raisins, cinnamon, and brown sugar, the quinoa was pretty good, but not at all what I wanted.

 

Odds and Ends

On Thursday at my 38 week appointment, (yes you read that right, I’m writing this on the last day of 38 weeks), I was having more swelling in the right foot/calf than the left. This led to an ultrasound (because it can be a sign of a blood clot), and the decision that Friday would be my last day of work. Everything came back normal with the ultrasound, thank God!

Like magic, resting instead of working has alleviated almost all of my swelling, and I feel much better. But it has been very difficult for me to NOT work! I actually went in on Monday to have lunch with my long-term sub and we taught the reading lesson together and I did the read-aloud. It was a nice transition out of the classroom for both the kids and me.

Days until my next appointment: 1

Total weight gained: 25 pounds. In the past two weeks I’ve gained 5 pounds…that is a significant gain in comparison to my normal .5/week gain. I’m definitely seeing it in my thighs, so I’m thinking a lot of it is water retention. At least I hope it is, I really hope Baby Spinach is not a 10 or an 11-pounder!

Exercise: non-existent. Unless you could bouncing and rocking back and forth on my exercise ball and cleaning the house.

Cravings: Jamba Juice. But I should really just make smoothies at home. So much cheaper!

Aversions: standing, sitting, laying down….oh wait, those are all of my options. Did I mention I’m ready to be done being pregnant?

What I miss: pre-preggo clothes

 So, when do you think Baby Spinach will arrive? How about weight and length guesses?

Maternity Photo Session

On September 1st, when I was 35 weeks 2 days pregnant, Tim and I had a maternity photo session with the very talented Laura Fifield. We chose to do the session at Lake Coeur d’Alene, near the NIC campus on the East end of the lake. I really wanted a sunset session, and loved the location in this photo shoot. Laura was totally in sync with what I was looking for, and I am very excited with our proofs!

37 Weeks – Full Term!

How Big is the Baby?

Huge. On average babies her gestational age weigh around 6.3 pounds and are a bit over 19 inches. This is about the length of a stalk of swiss chard. She is considered full term now, which means if she were born today she wouldn’t have a NICU team in the delivery room waiting to whisk her away. I’d like her to stay cooking though.

 

How I’m Changing

I am thisclose to being an outie. It’s crazy to see the end of my belly button. And my skin, super itchy! No amount of body butter helps. I’m not sure how much more it can stretch!

I’m also finally thirsty. Up until this point in my pregnancy I’ve only drunk water because I knew I needed to, not because I wanted to. But now, I can’t get enough. I’m always chugging water. One of my students even asked me why I drink so much water, haha.

 

How I’m Feeling

Blargh. Terrible! My sciatic nerve is on my last nerve, I keep waking up with heartburn (so I’ve been “sleeping” in the glider), and I’m swelling a ton. Nobody else notices my swelling, but I do. Some people have knobby knees, I have knobby ankles, and now I have tree trunk cankles. Uggh.

I’ve been rockin’ the crocs lately (don’t judge), and today they got to be too tight! You know you have a problem when crocs are too tight. So I swapped into my Sanuk flip flops, but those left indents by the end of the day too. But Baby Spinach has dropped quite a bit, which has resulted in a lot more sciatic pain, but less back pain! So that is one plus. I am physically very ready for Baby Spinach to arrive, but I’d really like her to stay put until October 4th.

 

What I’m Eating

Apples, protein shakes, raspberry leaf tea, evening primrose oil, burlattas, and other items in wraps. Oh, and chocolate chip pecan cookies made by the hubs. He is the cookie king.

I’m soaking up these last few weeks with friends and the hubs before our life changes completely.

This weekend I had brunch with some of my girlfriends, and then the hubs and I went out to Coeur d’Alene to hit up Mother’s Haven (a fab maternity/baby/post-partum store). I had a $30 living social deal, as well as a $10 gift card, so I scored a $49 Bravado nursing bra for only $9! The hubs also picked up a “cool” bottle* for Baby Spinach. Apparently the glass Born Free bottles I chose were too “girly” for him. Not sure how, but since he’ll be on bottle feeding duty I’ll let him buy what he wants.

*I am planning to breastfeed, but I’ll be pumping when I get back to work, and he will bottle feed when I have girls nights.

In addition to my fab nursing bra, I’ve been going on a bit of an online shopping spree. We used our 10% registry completion discount on Amazon to buy what we deem to be necessities. And Zulily had Glamourmom nursing tanks on sale over the weekend, so I was able to score 3 of those at half price. Whoo hoo! Packages have been arriving daily 🙂

Things I can’t wait to eat again: Very excited to celebrate Baby Spinach with a bottle of pumpkin stout!

Days until my next appointment: 2

Total weight gained: 24 pounds

Exercise: pretty non-existant, although my school is huge, so when I walk from one end to the other it is about a third of a mile. And I walk it a few times a day

Cravings: sleep & caffeine. I’m fairly positive these are related cravings.

Aversions: crocs. Damn, I’m stuck with them.

What I miss: having energy at the end of the day

36 weeks

How Big is the Baby?

Most likely between 5.5 and 6 pounds, and 18-20 inches long. This is around the size of a Crenshaw melon, which I’ve never tried, but it sounds interesting.

 

How I’m Changing

Just keep getting bigger! My hands/fingers still swell in the morning, but once I start moving around for a few hours this goes away. Almost no swelling in my feet/ankles, so that is nice!

 

How I’m Feeling

My pelvis feels like it’s being ripped in half, and my tailbone is what is attacking it. My sciatic nerves are cranky too. This makes teaching super fun in case you were curious.

 

What I’m Eating

Lots of goodies from the garden!

And we cracked into the first of the freezer meals I made on Labor day: slow cooker beef burritos. Yum! I’m eating lots of things in wraps – grilled chicken, black beans, & beef. Fast and easy is my agenda these days. I’m also loving apples, watermelon, and Greek yogurt, but what’s new? And not food, but I started taking Evening Primrose Oil, (to help soften the uterus), yesterday, in addition to my raspberry red leaf tea.

 

Odds and Ends

In two days I’ll be full term! Ahhhhh! We’re almost all ready on the home front. This weekend the hubs and his dad installed the ceiling fan in her nursery, so now aside from the pictures from our maternity, birth, and newborn sessions, it’s done. We’ll obviously have to wait on those.

 

Our cars are ready too – we installed the car seat (Chicco Keyfit 30) in mine, and the extra base in the hubs. We need to get them inspected still, which we’ll do this coming weekend.

 

And yesterday I spent about 45 minutes listening to Baby Spinach’s heartbeat because I hadn’t felt her move much all day. Then when I arrived at my weekly appointment my blood pressure was high (it is usually very low). Between the two issues, my midwife sent me across the street to the hospital to get monitored for peace of mind. Baby Spinach was doing just fine! They had me drink 8oz of cranberry juice cocktail (it has the highest fructose content so baby’s really move after you drink it), and monitored her heartbeat and her movements. I also had a little clicker that I pushed each time she moved. The triage nurse told me she was moving more than any baby she’d seen all day and she was a perfect baby 🙂 So I was worried for no reason. I also had a contraction while there, but I didn’t feel it. Maybe labor contractions will be the same, haha. A girl can dream, right? 😉

Days until my next appointment:  3 until chiro and massage, a week until my next midwife appt.

Total weight gained: according to my scale at the beg of the day 22.5 pounds, and according to the scale at my midwife’s office at the end of the day 26 pounds. I’m inclined to believe mine, especially since I saw an expiration sticker on hers with a date of 9/2012.

Exercise: oi, umm walking as much as I can. I know it’ll be good for labor, but man, I have NO energy for exercise these days!

Cravings: none really, but the other day I saw a commercial for dove bars and had to have one. I told the hubs the next day and complained that they needed to not have commercials for things that taste good when I watch tv. He said he forgot to turn on the pregnancy blocking code. Bummer. He bought them for me, and the craving was fixed.

Aversions: being awake on my feet

Weeks 34 & 35

I completely missed posting last week due to my 10-12 hour days spent between The Rocket, where I planned, and my classroom, where I set up for the new year. Pictures are from 34 weeks, with the exception of the sneak peek at our maternity shoot!

How Big is the Baby?

The size of a large cantaloupe, which I find funny since I’m pretty sure a pineapple is bigger than a cantaloupe (which is what she was at 33 weeks).  She is somewhere between 18 and 20 inches long and 4.5-6 pounds. I feel like she is huge. Her rump fills my hand and she stretches from one side of my torso to the other. It is crazy to see her movements these days.

 

How I’m Changing

My pelvis is definitely shifting – my pelvis, tailbone, and hips are extremely sore and everything feels even more loosey goosey than before. I’ve almost fallen over a few times! Maybe this means she’s gearing up to come early. My chiro said she was in a great position for birth at my last appt, so we’ll see!

 

How I’m Feeling

Pretty exhausted! I’m really worried about this first week of school and how I’ll make it to 3 p.m. every day. Luckily I moved across the hall, so I no longer get direct sunlight until around 2 p.m., so the heat isn’t too bad.

 

What I’m Eating

Whatever is fast and easy! I’ve been downing more bars and protein shakes than I’d like, but at least they keep me from dying while I plan/work. I’ve also been snacking on lots of apples, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and trail mix with cashews, almonds, and macadamia nuts. I’ve also been drinking a mug of red raspberry leaf tea once a day for the past two weeks. I’m up for anything that might help during labor!

 

I also just busted out a 7-hour day in the kitchen to make 16 freezer meals. With leftovers this should last us through the end of October! I don’t think I’ll do that at 8 months pregnant next time around, as I had to keep taking rest breaks. But my plan from now on is to always make a double batch of whatever I cook so I can freeze half (if it is a freezable meal, of course). A full days recap will be available on the blog soon.

 

Odds and Ends

A few fun bullet points over the past couple weeks:

*I start school tomorrow – ahhh! I have the first 5 weeks of lesson plans done for all subjects, so I can leave at a moments notice without leaving my sub or my students in a lurch. Phew! That was no small task!

I am almost finished with the nursery! I still need to order oversize scrabble tiles to hang her name above her bed, and order a yellow rug if I can ever find one that is the correct size and color. I might have to give up on this dream becoming a reality. But the pinwheels I made are hung, as is the artwork made by my co-workers daughter. The hubs bought me a fish eye lens for my camera, so soon I’ll be able to post a nursery tour 🙂

We are fully stocked on cloth diapers! I think I have 27 newborn size (borrowed from a friend), and 30 one-size (new). I need to prep the new ones, but I’m not in a huge rush to do that since she won’t fit into them for a while. I bought an assortment of brands, because I wasn’t sure which ones I’d like the most. Based on favorites of my friends, and reading mommy blogs, I think I’ll like the rumparooz and bummies easy fits the most.

Things I can’t wait to eat again: I’m really ready for pumpkin latte season!

Days until my next appointment: 7

Total weight gained: 19.5 at 34 weeks, 20 pounds at 35 weeks

Exercise: my walks have gotten shorter, and shorter. I can still bust out a mile, but it takes me nearly as long as 3 miles used to take! Plus lots of classroom set up – that is a total body work out!

Cravings: the watermelon craving came back, yum!

Aversions: handling raw meat still totally grosses me out

What I miss: having energy. I’m a total burn the candle at both ends ball of energy before school starts/during the school year. But my body is yelling at me for trying these days.

33 weeks

 

How Big is the Baby?

Sources vary, but somewhere around 19 inches long (she may or may not still be growing length wise) and between 4.5 and 5 pounds. She is roughly the size of a pineapple. Yum, pineapple sounds SO good right now!

 

How I’m Changing

My belly button is almost flush with the rest of my tummy. I’ll be an outie soon. I’m starting to swell in my fingers, which I know is more heat related than water consumption related. I’m drinking somewhere around 130 ounces a day, possibly more. But the plus side to swelling is I am wearing my great-grandmother’s engagement ring because it now fits!

 

How I’m Feeling

My sciatic pain is more frequent, like a dull glute ache. Also, nausea is back! Gahhh, I thought I was free from it, but apparently not. And heartburn is intermittent. I’ve been having some pregnancy insomnia, which is killer by the way, and around 4 or 5 in the morning I’ll be starving. I can’t find something that works well as a snack to help me fall back to sleep. I’ve attempted nuts, which would be my top choice, but they give me killer heartburn (at least in the early morning hours, not in the afternoon or evening, weird!).

 

What I’m Eating

Lots of zucchini and yellow squash. And this week our tomatoes finally turned red! The hubs made a very tasty pasta sauce with them and I have some bruschetta plans in the very near future. But I honestly don’t have much of an appetite, which I think it mostly due to the heat. I’m slugging water like crazy!

 

Odds and Ends

My second baby shower was this weekend, and my parents came into town for it. I finally snapped a picture of me with Grandpa Spinach. I’m glad we did because otherwise we wouldn’t have one together with me pregnant.

 

I received the yellow rug I ordered for the nursery, only to be very disappointed. Online it looked like a buttery yellow, but in person it was more dish-water/mustard yellow. I love mustard yellow, but it isn’t the hue I’m going for. Luckily I ordered it from JC Penny, so I could return it to the store without a hassle or paying for return shipping. But the yellow rug hunt of 2012 continues.

 

And finally, I started setting up my classroom yesterday. I planned to meet up with the teacher who I’ll be job sharing with this year, but she texted me Sunday night to say she needed to reschedule because she had her baby! I moved into her classroom, so I spent the whole day trying to figure out where to put my stuff, and where her stuff was located. Hopefully I don’t screw up her organization system too much! Unfortunately I really overdid it. I was there from 9-4, in 97 degree heat and the building isn’t air-conditioned. Only three of my six windows open (the others are painted shut I think), so the heat was pretty stifling. I came home and had to lie down for 2 hours afterward. Luckily today I woke up to rain and 65 degrees! My classroom was much more bearable!

Things I can’t wait to eat again: I’m getting excited about pumpkin beer season 😉

32 weeks

How Big is the Baby?

Approximately 19 inches and 4.5 pounds. The size of a honeydew melon! I believe it, she constantly sticks her bum out and it feels pretty large. Takes after her mama, haha.

 

How I’m Changing

Ummm, I’m huge.

 

This week everything became a work out. I pulled down the garage door and pulled something down there. Not sure which muscle, but it is no bueno. My right groin is still loosy goosy, and my sciatic nerve on both sides is driving me nuts!

 

How I’m Feeling

All in all I’m alright. Just very, very hot! Spokane is having the hottest summer in many years, and while the mid 90’s isn’t Arizona quality heat, we aren’t having dry heat. We’re having a very humid summer, which is out of the norm for Spokane. It is very annoying! I would love to spend more time outdoors, but I’m too hot to do that comfortably 😦

 

What I’m Eating

Cottage cheese + veggies or fruit, chobani 2%, romano beans, zucchini, zucchini, zucchini.

 

Odds and Ends

Thanks to my mother-in-laws help, Baby Spinach now has crib bedding! Tackling this project was more time consuming than I originally thought it would be, but I am SO pleased with how it turned out.

 

I’ll write a more detailed post in the future about how this fabric went from dream to reality.

I also borrowed some awesome baby items: arms reach co-sleeper, bumbo, and bouncy chair. And my friend V, who already knitted Baby Spinach an adorable hat, sent some made with love burp cloths. She’s so spoiled already!

Not cutesy related: the hubs and I attended our first (of two) childbirth classes at the hospital where I’ll be delivering. I wanted to do the Bradley Method, but it was 8 weeks worth of 2-hour classes, and since we never know when the hubs will be on the road for trial, it wasn’t a time commitment we could make. So we opted to go the hospital class route, assuming from its description that it would be a good option for us. It sounded like we’d be learning about, and practiving, different birthing positions, natural pain relief positions and pressure points, and the like. There was maybe 5 minutes of that information, and unfortunately I feel like it was a waste of money and time. I already knew all of the information presented, and the majority of the participants were rather immature. Like making “ewww” noises during the videos, or when the instructor talked about the placenta. Really!?! My 4th graders are more mature than that! (well, most of the time, haha). We have one more class in two weeks, and I’m debating not attending and calling to get a partial refund.

The only good thing is that we were able to go on a hospital tour. The hospital I’m delivering in doesn’t have a nursery, so Baby Spinach will be rooming with us. All birthing suites have a jaccuzzi tub, mini-fridges, DVD and CD players, and they have 3 birthing balls. I might bring my own just in case all 3 are in use. And a major plus – they provide sandwiches for the husbands! Haha, this might not sound like a big deal, but most hospitals only provide food for mama after delivery, so it is nice that even though we’ll bring snacks there will be a meal option for the hubs.

Things I can’t wait to eat again: writing about sandwiches just reminds me of how much I’d love a Jimmy John’s sammie.

Days until my next appointment: I had one yesterday, a chiro appt. on Friday, and my next midwife appt. is in 2 weeks.

Total weight gained: 17.5 pounds

Exercise: Not as great as it has been. My walks are shorter, and my pulled muscle had me down for a few days 😦
