Grandma Crider’s German Sweet Chocolate Cake

We make this every year for my Dad’s birthday. Serious yum factor.

10 ounces chopped dates

1 tsp baking soda

1 cup boiling water

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter

pinch of salt

2 eggs

1 3/4 cup flour

1 1/2 boxes Baker’s brand bittersweet chocolate (hard to find, if you can’t find it you can sub Baker’s semi-sweet chocolate, but do not sub chocolate chips)

Powdered sugar

Heat oven to 350 and grease/flour a 9×13 pan. I use canned spray with flour.

In a medium size bowl dust dates with baking soda and cover with boiling water.

Allow to cool.

In a large bowl cream sugar, butter and salt.

Add eggs and beat until smooth.

Add flour, mix well.

At this point your date/water mixture should be cool. Add to large bowl and mix well.

Pour into 9×13 pan.

Open your box of Baker’s chocolate…you will find little chocolate presents inside.

Unwrap and chop. I usually chop them in half at the seam and then cut each half into 6 or 8 pieces.

Sprinkle on top of cake.

Bake for 30-35 minutes (until you can insert a toothpick and have it come out clean).

Allow to cool and sprinkle powdered sugar on top.

(putting the sugar in a sifter and then sifting on top of the cake works well)

This cake is best the second day, so I always make it the night before. Enjoy!
